Wilmot Works It Out

Wilmot Works It Out was a game developed by Hollow Ponds (Wilmot's Warehouse, Flock, I Am Dead) with Talha Kaya (Mashina, Judero) and longtime collaborator Richard Hogg (Hohokum, various Hollow Ponds projects). It featured audio and music by Eli Rainsberry (Saltsea Chronicles, various Hollow Ponds projects). It was published by Finji (TUNIC, Night In The Woods) and released on PC and Mac on October 23, 2024, followed by Nintendo Switch in 2025.

Since Wilmot's Warehouse (the first Wilmot game) already had excellent controls for moving and manipulating many boxes at once, a leisurely jigsaw-puzzle game was a natural progression for the series. As a fan of Warehouse, I was excited to get the chance to contribute.

The QA team spent extensive time testing and retesting the game's various puzzles, with a focus on accessibility, and a goal of balancing clarity and difficulty. Wilmot's world has a very bold and cartoonish style, but the limited colour palette can lead to some puzzles having issues with contrast or fine details... some of which are intentional, given the goal is to (gently) challenge the player.

The project was already stable to begin with, but that meant as a team we were able to advise and assist while all the additional elements of the game came together. Story, customization, player expression, all of which elevate the game beyond the simple puzzler it could have been into something meditative and thoughtful.

A delight, in many senses of the word.
